: Sanka :
Species: Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina)
  Narrative

9-10-10: Sanka was found near the Seward harbor, going in and out of the water. When ASLC stranding staff arrived, Sanka appeared to be underweight and her hind flippers looked swollen. The decision was made to bring her to the Alaska SeaLife Center to be assessed by a veterinarian.

9-11-10: Sanka has multiple wounds on her flippers. Her most noticable injury is where the swelling was originally seen. She is being treated with antibiotics to fight infection.

9-12-10: X-rays revealed that Sanka's condition is far worse than her physical examination suggested. Her infection is so severe that her bones have degenerated at the joints, resulting in very painful arthritis and causing the swelling around her flippers. Unfortunately the infection has caused damage that is irreversible, and Sanka would never be able to live a normal, pain-free life. She was humanely euthanized this evening.
