: Dunkin :
Species: Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina)
  Narrative

5-28-10: Dunkin was found in the net of a fishing boat in Cordova, AK. Thanks to Alicia Jensen, who helped care for him as the boat made its way to port. Also thank you to Autumn and Angela of the Native Villiage of Eyak for their assistance, and to Era Aviation for donating Dunkin's flight.

5-29-10: At just 4 days old, Dunkin came to the Alaska SeaLife Center underweight and dehydrated. He is being monitored closely, and is receiving Subcutaneous (SQ) fluids to aide in his hydration. SQ fluids are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream from beneath the skin.

5-31-10: Dunkin spent the day outside in the condo area with some of the other seal pups! He has shown improvement, and no longer needs SQ fluids.

6-3-10: Dunkin is stable enough to spend his first night outside!

6-7-10: Dunkin is over two weeks old, and has graduated to fish formula.

6-11-10: Dunkin now spends every night outside with the rest of the seal pups.

6-14-10: Dunkin started fish school today, but he seems to be too involved in sucking on the side of his tote to notice any fish in the water with him.

6-20-10: Dunkin started eating fish today!

6-22-10: Dunkin is a pro at eating fish, and can even track down the live fish that are put in his pool. He won't need to be tube fed fish formula anymore.

6-26-10: Dunkin continues to grow - today he weighs 11.3 kg, or almost 25 lb.

7-1-10: Today Dunkin moved into a pool with Arabica. Putting the seals together once they are healthy and eating well allows them to learn how to forage competetively - a skill that will be most important once the seals are released.

7-6-10: Dunkin loves his fish! He is always first in the pool at feeding time.

7-11-10: Today Dunkin, Arabica and Chai were moved to a large pre-release pool. Here they will have little to no human contact for the rest of their stay at the ASLC.

7-22-10: Dunkin continues to compete well for fish, and is steadily gaining weight.

7-30-10: Dunkin has been fending off the glaucous winged gulls lately - they keep stealing his fish!

8-12-10: Dunkin is thriving in the pre-release pool with Chai and Jitters. Today he had a thorough veterinary exam to make sure he is in good health. Rehabilitation staff is hopeful that he will be released in a few weeks.

9-3-10: Today Dunkin was introduced to Grande. They will be sharing a pool with each other until their release day. Dunkin and Grande were both found in the same area, and will be released in Cordova together.
