Overview The ASLC  Wildlife Response program responds to live and dead marine wildlife that has been abandoned, stranded, or injured throughout Alaska. The ASLC is the only institution authorized to rehabilitate live stranded marine mammals in the state. We operate under permits and agreements issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). ASLC plays a critical role in responding to oil spills or other unusual events. In addition to covering the live animal response and care during the ‘busy’ season, May to September, ASLC remains in a ready state year round to provide basic animal care for oil-affected animals and deploy a mobile treatment and rehabilitation enclosure. The ASLC Wildlife Response Program is an important part of the Center's commitment to generate and share scientific knowledge to promote understanding and stewardship of Alaska’s marine ecosystem. The main goal of this program is to learn from live and dead stranded animals to better understand wild populations and maintain capacity to respond to natural or manmade disasters. Seward, Alaska (December 16, 2015) - Egg, a giant Pacific octopus, was released back into the waters of Resurrection Bay on Dec. 16. Giant Pacific octopus are the largest known species of octopus in the world.   Egg was first found on Easter Sunday, 2012, making him the Alaska SeaLife Center’s Easter “Egg”. Back then Egg weighed less than 10 grams, or 0.02 pounds. At his last weigh in before his release, Egg weighed 31.9 kilograms – over 70 pounds!   Researchers at the Alaska SeaLife Center are trying to learn more about the juvenile stages of octopuses like Egg. Join us for a special community watch party at the Alaska SeaLife Center as we livestream "An Evening with Bill Nye live from Anchorage's Alaska Center for the Performing Arts – part of the University of Alaska Anchorage’s CAS Community Lecture Series. This is a unique opportunity to gather with fellow community members and science enthusiasts for an evening of thought-provoking conversation! Wei Ying has worked in interdisciplinary and multicultural conservation projects both locally and internationally for almost two decades. An experienced executive with a passion for marine science, the pursuit of studies and career has brought her to many different states and countries. Amidst snowstorms, Wei Ying joined ASLC and the community of Seward in December 2021 as the Chief Science and Education Officer (CSEO). As CSEO, Wei Ying reenergized and expanded the science and education programs to develop and implement a visionary science agenda. Wei Ying was named President and CEO on March 31, 2024. Wei Ying marries her social science training and love of strategy to build programs that engage diverse stakeholders in conservation to achieve measurable outcomes. She is committed to the establishment of inclusive discourses and socially just environmental policies, as well as dismantling the systems of power and privilege in the conservation arena. Wei Ying earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Environmental Studies at Brown University and continues to keep her fingertips in invasion ecology research. She has been the recipient of multiple research fellowships including Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Environmental Communication and Margaret Sheridan Community Learning Award, as well as a participant of several leadership programs such as Toyota-Audubon Conservation Leader, Rhode Island Foundation Emerging Non-Profit Leader, and AZA Executive Leadership.

Endowment Fund Make a donation today that keeps giving year after year The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) has partnered with the Alaska Community Foundation (ACF) to create the Alaska SeaLife Center Endowment Fund, which will support the ASLC in achieving its mission of generating and sharing scientific knowledge to promote understanding and stewardship of Alaska’s marine ecosystems for the years to come. Endowment funds generate a predictable stream of income, leaving a majority of the assets to grow in perpetuity. An endowment offers the flexibility to meet ASLC’s immediate needs while ensuring assets are always preserved for our long-term mission. The ACF protects the fund’s assets from being spent for any other purpose. For example, your gift today will be invested by the ACF and will earn returns every year from the moment you make it. That means a gift of $1,000 today is a gift of $50 every year permanently to the Alaska SeaLife Center. The Alaska SeaLife Center Endowment Fund welcomes gifts of all kinds including cash, bequests, stock, real estate, life insurance and retirement assets. Seward, Alaska (April 17, 2015) - The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) opens its doors to the Summer of Sharks. Headlining the season is the Buzz Saw Sharks of Long Ago exhibit on loan from the Idaho Museum of Natural History in collaboration with artist Ray Troll. Areas around the aquarium are now transformed into the Paleozoic marine world of the humongous, whorl-toothed shark, the Helicoprion, via fossils, sculptures, and artwork. This prehistoric giant is the world's only animal - past or present - with a complete 360-degree spiral of teeth. Imagine a fearsome behemoth equipped with a circular blade of teeth and strong jaws that researchers believe crimped and cut its prey. The Buzz Saw Shark roamed the Permian Seas more than 270 million years ago. Detailed artwork from Troll include a 17.5-foot-long by 8-foot-high mural of sharks, as well as 21 individual pieces. Children and adults alike will enjoy a humorous documentary film about the artist as they sit on a whorl-patterned "art couch," activate the whorl tooth mechanism, "walk the whorl," and ponder the incredible bite of a "large-as-life" Helicoprion head. Obsessing over the prehistoric marine species for more than 20 years, Troll is now the go-to guy for all things Helicoprion. His colorful artwork combined with informational graphics explore a side of scientific history you have never seen before. Also opening April 17tth is the new Skates of Alaska exhibit, featuring the sharks' "flatter" cousins! Summer of Sharks is open April 17th through September 7th.

Seward, Alaska (August 31, 2020)The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) has been granted a generous dollar-for-dollar matching donation up to a total of $250,000 from ConocoPhillips Alaska. ASLC is continuing a fundraising campaign that started in July to offset the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week the Center announced meeting the initial $2 million campaign goal to avoid permanent closure. Despite this success, ASLC’s financial need has not gone away, and the Center is still fighting for long term survival in the face of uncertainty. “The outpouring of support has been amazing, and we are no longer looking at a situation where we could close permanently this fall. Thanks to ConocoPhillips Alaska, we are excited to transition into a new campaign phase where supporters have the opportunity to ensure we are able to do more than just barely survive,” said President and CEO Tara Riemer. “Mission programs like education, research, and wildlife response need financial support to continue operations through the offseason.” The ConocoPhillips Alaska donation is a matching donation, which means they will match the next $250,000 that the Alaska SeaLife Center is able to raise. Memberships and other donations are eligible for this match through the month of September or until the $250,000 is reached. “We have supported the Alaska SeaLife Center for more than 20 years,” said Joe Marushack, President of ConocoPhillips Alaska. “We greatly value the close relationship we have with the Center and with this match challenge and donation, we look forward to helping the Center continue with their mission of serving Alaska’s marine research, education and wildlife response programs.” 

Chief Science and Education Officer ASLC seeks an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as its Chief Science and Education Officer (CSEO). As a new position at ASLC, the CSEO represents an investment in the growth of the science department and the importance of collaborative science and education programs. The Chief Science and Education Officer will partner with the CEO, Board, and staff to set and execute a vision for science at ASLC, including generating funds to support ASLC’s growth. The ideal candidate will be a relationship builder with demonstrated experience cultivating and maintaining lasting collaborations and partnerships. I was born in Washington DC but grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland. At Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, I received an Air Force ROTC scholarship and obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering and thought that I was done with school. I was in the Air Force for seven years and obtained a master’s degree in Engineering Management from the University of Dayton, Ohio. After I left the Air Force, I decided to pursue a veterinary degree. What intrigued me about medicine was the same thing that intrigued me about engineering, namely understanding how things worked. While I picked up required prerequisites and a second bachelor degree in Biology at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, I also volunteered at a local zoo and worked part time for the Wildlife Clinic at Tufts Veterinary School. My first blood drawing experience was in the field, sampling colonial nesting birds. I traveled across the country to attend veterinary school at Washington State University but also pursued external aquatic animal experiences, attending AquaVet at Wood’s Hole and doing an externship at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. After graduation, I moved back to the east coast and did a two year aquatic animal internship at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. At the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine I helped start a new stranding center for marine mammals and later at the University of Southern Maine I developed marine mammal cell cultures and investigated the effects of heavy metals on those cells. Wanting to return to spending more time working with whole animals and not just their cells, I crossed the country once again to accept a job at the Alaska SeaLife Center. As the Staff Veterinarian I assist with the preventative medicine program, research projects, and clinical care for birds, fish, and marine mammals including both captive and stranded animals. Marine animals as sentinels for ocean and human health, comparative beluga whale health in particular how it facilitates understanding the endangered Cook Inlet population, how information and expertise about free ranging wildlife and those housed in zoological collections help each other.
