Seward, AK – April 30, 2015– The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted its first stranded marine mammal for the 2015 season. The two-day-old female harbor seal pup was found abandoned on mud flats near Kachemak Drive in Homer, Alaska on April 24. Staff from ASLC’s Wildlife Response Program were already in the Homer area conducting a volunteer training when the call came in from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Staff were then able to monitor the pup’s condition first-hand. Along with minor injuries, the pup still had her white lanugo coat, indicating she was born prematurely. After searching the area for her mother or other seals, the crew made the decision to bring the pup in.  The newborn arrived at the Alaska SeaLife Center on April 25 weighing 8.1 kilograms (18 pounds). The pup, named Silky, is currently being fed five times a day with a formula created specifically for seals that contains all of the nutrients and calories needed to help seal pups grow. The pup is currently in stable condition and staff say she is very feisty. Her feisty nature pairs well with this year’s naming theme: sharks. Staff chose the shark theme in celebration of ASLC’s 2015 Summer of Sharks. Silky is named after the silky shark species, a tropical shark with very smooth skin. The Alaska SeaLife Center is the only permanent marine rehabilitation center in Alaska, responding to wildlife such as harbor seals, walrus, and sea otters. The Center’s Wildlife Response Program responds to harbor seals with the authorization of NOAA. Once a seal is admitted to the Center, it is closely monitored by the veterinary and animal care staff at ASLC. According to President and CEO, Dr. Tara Riemer, “The Alaska SeaLife Center has very limited federal funding and no state funding to care for marine mammals, and we rely on donations to keep this program going. Seward, Alaska (January 3, 2017)– The Alaska SeaLife Center is pleased to kick-off 2017 with Winter FISHtival! Each Saturday during the month of January the Center will offer special family friendly activities led by animal care experts and educators. All activities are included in the cost of admission and free to members. Winter FISHtival Saturday events include: Magnify Magic, Underwater Adventure, and a Deep Diving Seabird Scatter Feeding. Step up to the microscope for a really close look at some of the smallest and most fascinating sea animals. Join our educators in the underwater viewing area to do the seal hop and learn more about sea lions and seals! See some high-speed, deep diving seabird action and find out how these birds are specially adapted for under-sea foraging. Seward, AK – March 29, 2017– The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) has admitted its first stranded marine mammal of 2017, a yearling ringed seal from Dutch Harbor. Following on the heels of a record breaking year in 2016 for the Center’s wildlife response team, ASLC President and CEO, Tara Riemer says wildlife response is shifting from a primarily summer activity to a steady year-round concern. “Over the past two years we have experienced a significant increase in total calls to our wildlife response hotline and in cases requiring action from our team. Based on what we have seen thus far in 2017, we expect this increased activity level to continue,” said Riemer. “The other trend we are seeing is that wildlife response is no longer primarily a summer activity. This has required a significant increase in staffing and allocation of our resources to ensure the high level of response and veterinary care to which the Alaska SeaLife Center is committed.” The recently admitted ringed seal first came to the attention of responders on February 26 following a call from a concerned citizen in Dutch Harbor. Community responders continued to observe the animal for several days at differing locations during which no physical abnormalities or injuries were observed. However, the ringed seal was approximately 250 miles out of its normal range, increasingly lethargic and appearing to avoid the water. With authorization for the rescue from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Alaska SeaLife Center, the seal was transported to Anchorage courtesy of PenAir where it was met by ASLC’s wildlife responders. When the ringed seal arrived at the Alaska SeaLife Center on March 3, she weighed 13.2 kilograms (29 pounds). Upon admission the seal’s coat was in good condition but she was underweight and severely dehydrated. The seal quickly transitioned to eating fish on her own. Further examination revealed that the seal was not maintaining body temperature and was severely parasitized. She is currently in “good but guarded” condition.   The Alaska SeaLife Center, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, is the only permitted marine mammal rehabilitation center in Alaska, responding with authorization from NOAA and the USFWS to wildlife across the state such as seals, walrus and sea otters. Staff at the Center work with community partners to assess animals and when appropriate transport them to the Center for care. For most seals admitted to the Center, treatment and rehabilitation is a three month process. Seward, Alaska (November 7, 2018) - Twenty-two top aquariums across the United States, including the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC), have already eliminated 5 million straws in their coordinated campaign to reduce sources of plastic pollution. Now they’re upping their game by encouraging individuals, businesses and cities around the country to cut back on single-use plastic—starting with plastic straws—by Earth Day 2019. Banding together in a joint #FirstStep to plastic-free waters, the aquariums seek commitments from 500 more businesses, pledges from individuals, and policy action by municipalities, all to reduce a growing source of single-use plastic waste that harms ocean and freshwater wildlife around the world. The campaign will kick off during #NoStrawNovember, a nationwide movement asking people who don’t need them to refuse plastic straws for 30 days.  “Reducing straws alone doesn’t solve the problem of plastic in our ocean, but it’s an important first step,” said Tara Riemer, ASLC President, and CEO. “Our goal is to get Alaskans thinking about ways to reduce single-use plastics—and encourage the availability of ocean-friendly alternatives in the state.” The #FirstStep campaign includes: Recruiting 500 new businesses to partner with aquariums across the country by committing to offer straws only on request, for a total of 1,000 businesses committed by Earth Day 2019 An online pledge site (pledge.ourhands.org/) where individuals can commit to make the last straw their first step to plastic-free waters Initiatives by partner aquariums to inspire cities in their regions to pass straws-on-request ordinances and other local measures to reduce single-use plastic An opportunity for individuals to get tips via text message on ways to cut back on single-use plastic in their daily lives. Since the 2017 launch of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership (ACP), 22 partner aquariums in 17 states – located on the coasts and in the heartland – have eliminated more than 5 million straws a year, stopped using plastic shopping bags, and have committed to significantly reduce or eliminate plastic beverage bottles by 2020.  Nearly 500 businesses—including United Airlines, the Chicago White Sox, Dignity Health hospitals and Farmer Brothers Coffee—have made plastic-reduction commitments in collaboration with ACP aquariums.                                                            Municipalities in aquarium communities, and California on a statewide basis, have enacted laws either banning single-use plastic from many foodservice operations or requiring businesses to offer plastic straws only when customers request them. Researchers at the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) recently captured a small male Pacific sleeper shark for an investigative study on the species. The Pacific sleeper shark is a close relative of the Greenland shark, which has been found to possibly live for several hundred years. “If findings from recent studies on the Greenland shark transfer to Pacific sleepers, these animals could maybe reach an astonishing age of 200-300 years old,” states Dr. Amy Bishop, ASLC Scientist. Dr. Markus Horning, ASLC Senior Research Scientist, is leading the study as Principal Investigator, together with Co-Investigators, Dr. Amy Bishop, Richard Hocking, and Jared Guthridge. The ASLC team is working closely with Co-Principal Investigator and shark expert, Dr. Christopher Lowe from California State University at Long Beach. They hope to investigate the ecological importance of these sharks, how their populations are impacted through fishing activities, as well as their predation habits. The Pacific sleeper shark is a large marine predator in Alaskan waters, and evidence from initial tagging work by the Center’s researchers suggests they may be a key predator of juvenile Steller sea lions. Researchers first began fishing for sharks in 2018 with the intentions of finding specimens under six feet. The goal is to bring up to five young, small sharks to the Center for short periods of time for select studies on their metabolic rates and basic biology. They will then be released back in Resurrection Bay with telemetry tags to monitor their movements. After receiving assurance from local fishing captain, Andy Mezirow, that sleeper sharks could be found right in the Bay, they started pulling a team together to fish regularly. Many methods were used to find a shark, but bait stations placed up to 900 feet down ended up being the most effective technique. Thirteen sharks were caught that were too big to fit in the metabolic chamber intended for the research study. Those sharks were tagged and released. “Successful sleeper shark captures were rewarding after much trial and error, but we continuously found animals that were too large for our study. We were either going to need a smaller shark or a bigger boat,” notes Dr. Horning. On July 1, 2019, the team found a shark about five feet long that fit perfectly in the transport carrier. Now that the animal is at the Center, Taylor Smith, Lowe’s graduate student at Cal State’s Shark Lab, will be heading the metabolic trials. Visitors to ASLC may at times be able to see research in action since the shark is in our largest pool, visible from the second floor. Since this is a bottom dwelling shark, a cover needs to be used on the pool when research is inactive to reduce light and regulate temperature. Seward, Alaska (February 25, 2020)– A young male sea otter pup was admitted to the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) on January 17, 2020.  Thetwo week old otter pup was found stranded on a beach near Seldovia, AK with snowballs embedded in his fur and surrounded by birds. A local resident called the stranding hotline to report that the young otter had been seen alone and there were no other otters in sight. After receiving permission from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Smokey Bay Air donated the flight to get the pup to Homer where a team of volunteers transported the otter to the Center. The sea otter pup, now seven weeks old, is under 24-hour care from our Wildlife Response Team. “Young otter pups like this one need constant care and attention, from grooming his coat to encouraging him to play in the pool. We are with him around-the-clock,” stated Wildlife Response Curator, Jane Belovarac. Currently, the otter is getting fed both formula and solid food every 3 hours. The team has slowly introduced clam into his diet and he is progressing well. Caretakers continue to work on getting him to practice proper grooming skills like rolling in the water and swimming with purpose. This young pup has already proven to be quite the athletic otter as he swims and manipulates toys in the water.   The Alaska SeaLife Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and the only permitted marine mammal rehabilitation center in Alaska. Sea otters leave their young in what they perceive to be a safe place while they forage for food. If people or pets are nearby when they return they are likely to abandon their young. Marine mammals have been safeguarded by the Marine Mammal Protection Act since 1972, so any disturbance to them is illegal without permission from the correct government authorities. If a sick or injured animal is encountered, ASLC staff urge people to call first, observe at a safe distance, respect the animal’s territory, and keep pets and children away. ASLC operates a 24- hour stranding hotline where trained professionals will walk people through the proper steps to assist the animal. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) has admitted a male harbor seal pup into the Wildlife Response Program. The harbor seal pup was found far from the water’s edge near a beach in Port Moller on the Alaska Peninsula. The animal was monitored for several days by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game until it became evident that intervention was necessary when no seals returned to the pup. The animal was transported to the Center after receiving National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration approval on June 15. Lake Clark Air graciously donated the flight for the seal to Anchorage.  Upon the initial admit exam, the main concerns of the veterinary team include severely low body weight,  dehydration, and gastrointestinal issues. The team is currently providing initial stabilizing treatments and examining the patient further to understand the severity of the animal’s condition. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted a female harbor seal pup to the Wildlife Response Program on July 4, 2021.   The seal was spotted on Fox Island, a popular landmark in Resurrection Bay, on July 3. Observers noticed the animal had a bloody neck and reported it to the ASLC Stranding Hotline. The following day, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officers were able to locate the animal and quickly transport it to the Center.    The veterinary team is focused on treating the many puncture wounds the pup likely sustained from a potential animal attack or failed predation attempt. The team will assess the patient further with radiographs and more in-depth exams to understand the severity of the animal’s condition. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) Wildlife Response Program now has six harbor seal pups under its care after the admission of two new patients — a male from Naknek admitted on June 17, and a female from Wrangell admitted on June 22.    The first pup was spotted by locals at a site in Naknek and reported to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) National Wildlife Refuge in King Salmon, AK, who contacted ASLC. Photos showed the pup was in poor condition, prompting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to authorize pickup. However, rescue efforts were complicated when the pup returned to the water and became entangled in a net before responders arrived. Fortunately, locals were able to free the pup, and it was transferred to a USFWS biologist and driven to a local airport for a flight to Anchorage. Here, staff from NOAA were able to coordinate the final leg of its journey to the ASLC for care.   The second pup was spotted in Wrangell, AK, hauled out on a rocky beach where seals are not typically seen. This raised concerns for two local beach walkers who reached out to NOAA. The seal’s skinny condition suggested prolonged separation from its mother, leading NOAA to approve rescue efforts. When a flight that night could not be coordinated, the observers mobilized help from fellow rescue members and were able to give it medical treatments overnight. Transportation to Anchorage was arranged the following day thanks to Alaska Airlines cargo staff in Wrangell. The seal arrived safely and was transported to the ASLC.   In addition to low weight, dehydration, and malnourishment, additional complications required quick action from veterinary staff. For the Naknek pup, a dangerously high body temperature was the most immediate concern. Meanwhile, the Wrangell pup arrived with persistent tremors due to a lack of nourishment. The team is currently providing initial stabilizing treatments to both patients and keeping a close watch to ensure the best possible chance of survival. Updates will be shared on the ASLC’s Facebook and Instagram pages as they become available.   The ASLC Wildlife Response Program can only succeed with help from corporate sponsors and individual donors. Five organizations from around the United States have come together to provide care to an orphaned Pacific walrus calf receiving rehabilitative care at the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) in Seward, Alaska, in hopes of giving her a second chance at life. The ASLC is leading the heartfelt and intensive effort to care for the rare orphaned Pacific walrus calf that arrived from Utqiagvik, Alaska, on July 22, 2024. The young female walrus, estimated to be only a few weeks old, was found abandoned after her herd left the area. She was emaciated, dehydrated, and had small superficial wounds covering her body when the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) gave the ASLC’s Wildlife Response Program approval to respond to the calf. Since its opening in 1998, the ASLC has admitted only eleven Pacific walrus calves to its Wildlife Response Program. It is the only organization authorized to rehabilitate live stranded marine mammals in the state of Alaska, making this female calf very special. “Caring for an orphaned walrus calf is an incredibly demanding task, requiring unwavering dedication and expertise,” said Dr. Wei Ying Wong, ASLC President and CEO. “We watch her signs of improvement with cautious optimism and are pleased to be supported by our partners in providing the best possible care for her and all our wildlife response patients.” In the three weeks since the walrus calf's arrival, the ASLC has received support from top walrus care institutions across the U.S., including SeaWorld, Indianapolis Zoo and Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Each organization, accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), has sent an additional staff member to assist with the calf's care. Additional AZA-accredited organizations are also assisting from afar and are potentially offering help for the coming weeks of care. This united effort highlights the power of collaboration in wildlife conservation and demonstrates the commitment of AZA-accredited institutions to preserving marine wildlife. “We are proud to have been able to answer the call to work with our AZA colleagues to care for this precious walrus. Our amazing animal care teams are on call 24/7/365 to help ill, injured or orphaned animals in need of expert care with the goal of rehabilitation,” said Dr. Chris Dold, SeaWorld’s Chief Zoological Officer. “As one of only four North American zoos and aquariums that are home to walruses, our staff are uniquely skilled to help provide care for this calf, and we were ready to pitch in as soon as the call came in,” said Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s General Curator Malia Somerville after they sent a member of their team to Seward, Alaska to assist with the around-the-clock care. Walrus calves are with their mom for one to two years and are highly social. They seek comfort through physical contact with their mothers. In rehabilitation, staff act as surrogates, sitting with the calf 24/7 and providing intensive care. This habituation to human care means that this calf will not be a candidate for release, but she will serve as an important ambassador for her species, raising awareness about the challenges faced by Pacific walruses and the ecosystems they live in. “Animal conservation is a team effort that requires collaboration and commitment. Answering the call to help with this rescue embodies our mission of protecting nature and inspiring people to care for our world,” said Dr. Robert Shumaker, Indianapolis Zoo President and CEO. Indianapolis Zoo is currently home to “Aku,” the Pacific walrus calf the ASLC rescued and rehabilitated in 2017. Like Aku, this current patient and any young orphaned walrus calves that are successfully rehabilitated are not candidates for release to the wild. "Walrus are amazing ambassadors for the Arctic and an inspiration to all of us to be better stewards of the planet we all share. We are honored to have walruses in our parks, providing our guests the opportunity to learn about them and inspiring people to protect them and their habitats," said Dr. Chris Dold. The joint efforts of ASLC and its AZA walrus care partners illustrate the dedication required to rehabilitate and care for such a precious marine mammal from the Arctic. By coming together, these organizations are giving this specific walrus calf the best possible chance at survival while also highlighting the broader significance of her species and the plight of the Arctic ecosystem as a whole. “This one abandoned and rescued walrus calf serves as a vital ambassador for her species, the communities who rely upon them, and the arctic ecosystem. The walrus calf, though still in a critical state, is showing positive signs of improvement. She is still in the quarantined wildlife response area and is not currently viewable to the public. The Alaska SeaLife Center admitted a unique patient to its Wildlife Response Program on June 16, 2025: a young male spotted seal pup from Nome, Alaska.  Fewer than ten spotted seals have ever been admitted to ASLC in the organization’s history. These Arctic seals are ice-associated animals, typically found along remote stretches of Alaska’s northern coastlines. Though they are commonly seen in these northern waters, recovering a stranded individual does not happen often.  A community member first spotted this spotted seal pup alone on a busy public beach near Nome, Alaska. Photos showed the pup was lethargic and extremely malnourished, and the sighting was quickly relayed through the ASLC’s 24-hour Stranded Marine Animal Hotline at 1-888-774-SEAL(7325).  ASLC contacted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which oversees seal strandings. After consultation with the local stranding agreement holder for the area, Nome's local tribal consortium, Kawerak Inc., and the Ice Seal Committee (ISC), the Alaska Native Organization that co-manages ice seals with NOAA, the decision was made to transport the animal to ASLC for urgent care.   Although the male pup was severely emaciated upon arrival, the presence of teeth and absence of a soft, white lanugo coat indicated he was not a newborn, likely around 3 to 4 weeks old. The ASLC wildlife response and veterinary teams have been treating him intensively since his arrival. He is now steadily gaining weight, eating well, and has been given the name “Kova.”  Responding to a stranded ice seal requires navigating both regulatory policy and respect for the Indigenous communities that rely on these animals for subsistence. In rescue situations involving Alaska’s four “ice seal” species (spotted, ringed, ribbon, and bearded), the ASLC follows a precautionary non-release policy developed by NOAA Fisheries and the ISC. Because ice seals transported to Seward for rehabilitation come from remote, culturally significant regions where they remain an essential food source, this policy eliminates the risk of disease transmission between ecosystems by a rescued animal. Therefore, even though Kova has recovered well so far, he will permanently remain in human care. In the meantime, diagnostic testing and ongoing monitoring are helping us better understand diseases that may be affecting wild seal populations and contribute valuable information about his species. Placement discussions are ongoing to ensure he has the best possible long-term home as he continues to gain weight and improve his health. As the only marine mammal rehabilitation facility in Alaska, the ASLC is proud to care for animals from remote regions of the state while working closely with the communities connected to them. For each of the sites, the timeline below shows (1) when the cameras were deployed, (2) when the first walrus was spotted at that location, (3) the date when the largest number of animals were counted on that site, and (4) the date of the last image taken by the cameras. The team collected census data by examining the photos at the end of the season and counting the walruses. Below are images captured from the haulout site on Cape Seniavin on August 4th, 2011. On this day, over 1,400 male walruses were counted hauled out in this single spot. Click on the thumbnail images below to see the larger versions: Researchers decided to add more cameras at this site in 2012 to avoid blind spots like the one created by the rock in the pictures above. On Hagemeister Island, cameras recorded the disturbance event seen below. Click on the thumbnail images below to see the larger versions: In the fourth photo you can see that these walrus quickly returned to the beach. The scientists couldn't see what caused the disturbance, but they think it was likely a bear or other land-based predator nearby. With clear images like the ones above, Dr. Polasek and her team agreed that camera monitoring at these remote sites is both possible and useful for understanding Pacific walrus behavior. Unfortunately, the type of camera the Alaska SeaLife Center team installed for the 2011 season tended to fail often. Many of the cameras stopped taking pictures before the last walrus left the site at the end of the season. So the 2011 data set isn't as complete as the team had hoped. They knew camera monitoring worked, but they needed to find a better type of camera. In 2011, the scientists were able to begin establishing their baseline. In 2012, they purchased new, more reliable cameras and added more haulout sites to their study. They're continuing to work on their baseline using male walrus in Bristol Bay, but with the help of the residents of Point Lay they've also set up their first cameras along the Chukchi Sea. I was the kid who was collecting mussels and counting things from as long as I remember and I don’t remember a time when I haven’t been interested in science. I think it was just the career that was always there for me. If you see a Steller’s eider in a picture or in the wild even better they’re really beautiful, they’re really a beautiful bird and it really is a cool duck. It is oftentimes just a big challenge to work with because it is so unique. We’re learning new things and we’re learning that things that apply to some other waterfowl species don’t necessarily apply to Steller’s eiders because they have their own ways of doing things, their own biology, ecology and I would say to some degree physiology as well. So they are really a unique species and sometimes they cause some head scratching and probably caused a few of my gray hairs just thinking about how to deal with some of these challenges but it also makes them really interesting to study. Each year presents a new opportunity to learn about Steller’s eiders and to grow from past successes and failures. Researchers are expecting another breeding season with hundreds of eggs. They are hoping that they have determined a good setup for the eiders at the Alaska SeaLife Center so more hens will be able to go through the complete incubation process, as Scarlet and Eek did in the summer of 2014. Dr. Tuula Hollmen is hoping to breed “tundra-ready” ducklings that would be able to survive on the tundra, should reintroduction become a reality. If wildlife managers decide that reintroduction is necessary to help these birds recover, the scientists at the Alaska SeaLife Center now have the tools of captive breeding necessary to help make this possible. Reintroduction would present a whole new set of questions for the team. How will they get their rearing techniques to work in the field? In a release facility, they would have to try to repeat what goes on at the Alaska SeaLife Center in the remote setting of the Y-K Delta. Since they would be on the tundra, there would be less manipulation of the habitat, but there wouldn’t be a lab nearby for immediate analysis. Also, Steller’s eiders are migratory birds, so they will travel from the place they are released. How will researchers help released ducklings establish winter and molting grounds? How will they get the eiders to return to the Y-K Delta for the next breeding season? Text goes here! Reintroduction of other bird species has been done successfully, but each species has its own specific needs. Nocturne & Day Programs   Nocturne Programs Enjoy an overnight adventure at the Alaska SeaLife Center! Students will spend the evening honing observation skills and participating in hands-on marine science programs. At night they'll fall asleep with the seabirds, sea lions, and seals. Each Nocturne Sleepover includes dinner, a light breakfast, plenty of time to explore the Alaska SeaLife Center, and two education programs. Nocturnes start at 5pm and last until 9am the next morning. Minimum 16 paying participants; two free adults per Nocturne. Maximum of 65 students and 15 adults. Program cost includes admission, education programs, dinner and breakfast. Nocturnes are available year-round and must be booked at least 30 days in advance. Female Elephant Seal is Alaska SeaLife Center’s First Marine Mammal Patient of 2022 Elephant seals are a rare species for the Center’s Wildlife Response Program The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted the first marine mammal patient of the year to its Wildlife Response Program, a 1-year-old female elephant seal from Seward. Within a week, the care of this animal concluded with a successful release of the seal back to the ocean. Since opening in 1998, the ASLC has responded to only thirteen elephant seals. It is normal for elephant seals to spend the summer in the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutians, but it is rare for them to travel into Resurrection Bay and haul out on the beach. The ASLC Wildlife Response Team first started monitoring this animal after a call to the ASLC Stranded Marine Animal Hotline (1-888-774-SEAL). The caller reported an elephant seal hauled out on the main boat ramp in the Seward Boat Harbor on March 19, 2022. The animal appeared bloated and lethargic, but was seen retreating to the water later that day during high tide. ASLC received two more reports of the elephant seal hauling out in other locations around the boat harbor. When the animal was observed for the third time, the Wildlife Response Team determined that intervention was necessary. After receiving approval from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the animal was transported to the Center with the help of the Coast Guard on March 21, 2022. Upon the initial admit exam, the main concerns of the veterinary team were the animal’s bloated appearance and unusual lethargy. It was also clear that the seal was going through its annual catastrophic molt. “Elephant seals will haul out on Alaska beaches during their annual catastrophic molt. Because of this molt, they can look and sound sickly compared to your typical harbor seal. Elephant seals will have superficial wounds over their body because they don’t just lose their hair, they shed the underlying layer of skin when they molt,” ASLC Wildlife Response Curator, Jane Belovarac notes. “When this particular elephant seal was first observed, our main concern was the bloating and labored breathing. We assumed that the superficial wounds were due to a molt, and our intake exam confirmed those suspicions." The bloating subsided quickly, and the blood and fecal analysis came back with no additional concerning results. The Veterinary and Wildlife Response Teams determined that the best course of action for the large seal would be to return her to the ocean as soon as possible, in hopes that she would not haul out in the busy Seward boat harbor again. On March 24, 2022, the ASLC Wildlife Response Team successfully released the elephant seal at Lowell Point, about two miles south of downtown Seward. Local volunteers assisted the team in lifting and walking the 320-pound seal, who was safely enclosed in a specially-designed large metal kennel, to the beach. She easily went into the water and headed toward the open ocean. Since then, we have not had any more sightings. Call 1-888-774-SEAL(7325) if you see any marine mammal in distress. It is good information the ASLC team can relay to the scientists who study them. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted a female northern sea otter pup to the Wildlife Response Program on September 4, 2023. This pup joins an extensive roster of 2023 patients cared for by the ASLC, including ten harbor seals, a fur seal, a walrus calf, and more.    The otter pup was found stranded on a road in Kenai, Alaska, over 5 miles up the Kenai River from the ocean. The original spotter believed the otter was a cat, but called the police when they discovered it was a young otter. Officials worked with the ASLC as the pup was moved away from the dangerous road, which was about half a mile away from the river.   The female pup was estimated to be around three months old, and her mother was not found in the vicinity. ASLC staff knew she needed help and received permission from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to bring her back to the ASLC for rehabilitation.  The main concerns found by the ASLC veterinary team upon the initial admit exam were dehydration and malnourishment. The pup’s blood glucose levels were low, and her feces indicated she had been stressed and had not eaten in a while. The team is currently providing stabilizing treatments and examining the patient further to understand the severity of her condition. Northern sea otter mothers invest a lot of maternal care into their pups and will not leave their pups unaccompanied except to dive for food. Mothers provide almost constant care until the pup weans between three to six months of age. When a sea otter pup is admitted as a patient to the ASLC Wildlife Response Program, it requires 24/7 care from our team.    “Young otter pups like this one need constant care and attention. At this age, they are transitioning from their pup coat to their adult coat and also being weaned. They need assistance grooming and monitoring their nutrition during this critical time. That is why sea otter pups require 24/7 care from ASLC staff until they are about six months of age,” said Wildlife Response Curator Jane Belovarac.  Follow the ASLC on Facebook and Instagram for more updates on this year’s rescue patients as the team works to nurse them back to health.  From September 10-16, 2023, ASLC will hold “Roundup for Wildlife Response,” an online fundraiser for the ASLC Wildlife Response Department. The Alaska SeaLife Center is the only institution in Alaska authorized to rehabilitate marine mammals. Followers can tune in for a special week filled with never-before-seen wildlife response stories on the ASLC social media pages from September 10-16, 2023. Floatplane access is very weather-dependant: things like cloud cover, fog, and wind can delay flights. We’re dropped off at a site by a floatplane and we unload all our gear onto the riverbank. We have all our camp stuff in big drybags and totes and we set up camp there for a few days. We have our base camp and go from there on a daily basis to all our sites. When the floatplane comes back, we pack up all our stuff in the plane and the floats. You have to be creative with getting all your gear in there!" Sadie describes some of her favorite things about working in the field. (1:04) Video Transcript Maps are one of my favorite things to create and look at and follow. Reading maps is a really big part of fieldwork. I love to look where we are going and what else is out there to explore. The typical day is, you never know what’s going to happen. Waking up in the tent and just kind of hoping that it’s not raining so you can do your work. From camp to where you want to go ranges from, it could be as close as a 15 minute walk or sometimes it is an hour and a half to two hours. The landscape in which you’re walking could be mudflats, through ponds, it could be crossing mud sloughs at low or high tide. If it’s high tide you have to be creative. What you see and find out there varies all the time. Even when you are at camp, cooking food and stuff, you can still be watching wildlife and what the birds are doing, which is really fun. (1:06) Video Transcript What Seth and other scientists have discovered is that the lack of cooling was so severe that it created a large area of warmer-than-usual water in the North Pacific. This area of warm water, called “the blob” by some scientists, had a reduced level of mixing between the lower and upper ocean layers. The puzzling impacts of this phenomenon are what the scientists of Gulf Watch Alaska are starting to piece together. It may have played an important part in the massive die-offs of seabirds like the common murre, because as we learned from Kathy scientists suspect that the murres were not receiving enough food to pile on their important fat reserves. Sonia mentioned that the bloom of phytoplankton was less productive than it had been in the past. And as we know, that could have a ripple effect throughout the entire food web, impacting everything from the tiniest of plankton to forage fish like herring and on up to their predators such as the murres. With the decrease in marine nutrients, apex predators like the mightiest of whales or even humans could be impacted by this situation. The potential consequences of “the blob” may seem frightening, but Gulf Watch scientists will be keeping an eye out for this and similar anomalies to better understand the health of the Gulf of Alaska. By combining their different areas of expertise, the Gulf Watch scientists were able to begin solving the mystery of the dying seabirds in the Gulf of Alaska but many questions remained. The Gulf Watch team will continue working together to understand not only how the ecosystem continues to recover from the Exxon Valdez oil spill, but also how the Gulf of Alaska continues to change as a result of other types of changes, both natural and human-caused in the ocean through interactions of Earth systems. Seward, Alaska (February 2, 2015) – The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) is pleased to announce that Mishka, a rescued sea otter, was safely transferred to her new home at the Seattle Aquarium. Mishka was transported by a FedEx plane to the Seattle Aquarium and made her public debut on Super Bowl Sunday. ASLC staff members travelled with Mishka in order to make her transition as stress free as possible.  Over the next few weeks, Seattle Aquarium staff will systemically acclimate Mishka to her new environment before introducing her to another resident sea otter. Mishka, Russian for “little bear,” was rescued by the ASLC’s Wildlife Response Program on July 12, 2014. She was found as a newborn in Port Moller, Alaska after being entangled in a fishing net. Due to the maternal care required by young otters, they are deemed non-releasable by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Mishka, now a healthy 26-pound, 6-month old female, received round-the-clock care during her stay at the Alaska SeaLife Center. Since July, Mishka has more than doubled her weight and transitioned from bottle-fed formula to eating a diverse diet, including capelin, surf clams, crab, mussels, and squid. After a final health check, ASLC veterinary staff cleared Mishka to be transferred to her new home in Seattle. The Alaska SeaLife Center is the only permanent marine rehabilitation center in Alaska, responding to wildlife such as sea otters and harbor seals. The Center’s Wildlife Response Program responds to sea otters with the authorization of USFWS. Once a sea otter is admitted to the Center, it is closely monitored by the veterinary and animal care staff at ASLC. Alaska SeaLife Center President and CEO Dr. Tara Riemer explained, “We have no federal or state funding to care for sea otters, and we rely on donations to keep this program going. Seward, AK – July 24, 2015 –The Alaska SeaLife Center is hosting its 17th Annual 5K Wildlife Rescue Run/Walk on Saturday, August 1. The fundraiser supports the rescue and rehabilitation mission of the Center’s Wildlife Response Program. This has been a busy year for the program, which is currently caring for one spotted seal, one ringed seal, 6 harbor seals, and one Steller’s eider.     The 5K race route follows a generally flat course along the scenic Seward waterfront. Walkers and runners are invited to register online at www.alaskasealife.org. Race bibs and t-shirts will be available for pick up in the Alaska SeaLife Center lobby on August 1 between 9:00 am and 11: 30 am. Untimed walkers will start the course at 11:15 am, and the starting gun for the timed run goes off at noon.
