Seward, AK (May 3, 2018)– The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) opened its doors on May 2, 1998 and has been generating and sharing scientific knowledge of Alaska’s unique marine ecosystems ever since. To celebrate this anniversary ASLC will be hosting a celebration, offering monthly promotions, and opening a new exhibit showcasing the past 20 years at the Center. The Alaska SeaLife Center will be hosting a celebration on May 20 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with several activities planned. In addition to the existing exhibits, visitors will be invited to listen to live music and enjoy food from Alaskan food vendors. In addition to the daily encounters and experiences, there will also be Science Spotlights, Education Programs, and Keeper Chats. As a thank you to the Center’s supporters, the celebration continues all year long with monthly promotions. On the first of each month, an announcement will be made on ASLC website and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AlaskaSeaLifeCenter) about the promotion that can be redeemed on the twentieth of each month. The Center recently opened an exhibit highlighting the past, present, and future of ASLC. A portion of the exhibit is dedicated to thanking supporters and visitors, and we are seeking public involvement in collecting historical content. Photos taken at the Center may be sent to 20thphotos@alaskasealife.org with the name of the photographer and approximate date the picture was taken for possible inclusion in the exhibit. The concept of ASLC began over 20 years ago, with the initial vision by Seward community leaders. Sparked by the impact of the 1989 oil spill, a group of concerned citizens and researchers formed the Seward Association for the Advancement of Marine Science, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Through capital funding and the support of the Seward community, the building of the Alaska SeaLife Center began in 1995 and opened in 1998. Since then the Center has continued to fulfill the original mission by focusing on marine research, education, and animal rehabilitation. “As we reflect on the past twenty years, we are thankful for our donors, members, and supporters who help make what we do possible. Seward, Alaska (May 8, 2018) – The Alaska SeaLife Center is saddened to announce the passing of Snapper, a 33-year-old harbor seal who was one of the Center’s original marine mammal residents. Snapper was recently humanely euthanized following a rapid decline due to age-related complications. In the wild, harbor seals can live as long as 30 years. At 33, Snapper was well into his geriatric years for his species. As a result of his mature age, staff monitored his health closely and addressed various age-related issues since he outlived a normal life expectancy. While veterinarians treated his chronic issues like cataracts and arthritis over the years, these ailments worsened with age. Dr. Kathy Woodie, ASLC veterinarian states, “Providing veterinary care for marine mammals can be very challenging, especially as we innovate to manage the issues that accompany our geriatric patients. From eye drops to ultrasounds, Snapper has been the bravest harbor seal patient, and he will be sorely missed.” Snapper was born at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut June 21, 1984 and resided there with other harbor seals and grey seals until 1985. He moved to two other aquariums before being permanently placed at the Alaska SeaLife Center in 1998. A month before the Center opened, Snapper arrived with 3 other harbor seals and lived at ASLC for almost exactly 20 years. Over the years the Alaska SeaLife Center has participated in harbor seal research. Starting in 1998, Snapper played an integral role in an investigative study on the decline of harbor seals in the Gulf of Alaska. At the time, theharbor seal population in Alaska had reportedly decreased by 90 percent at Tugidak Island, near Kodiak. Snapper was the largest and most dominant harbor seal at the Center and sired four offspring – Tongass, Kaya, Kordelia, and Kobuk. Kordelia, also known as Kordi, still resides at the Center, and like Snapper is often a part of the Marine Mammal Encounter. Snapper was one of the original seals that helped develop this behind the scenes program where visitors learn more about the species up close. Snapper is also known for his talents as a "Creative Critter" painter. At ASLC puffins and harbor seals paint canvas as part of regular enrichment. About Harbor Seals Harbor seals are one of the most abundant pinnipeds in the Northern hemisphere.Their populations are relatively stable worldwide, but have shown declines of around 80% over the past 30 years in the arctic regions. They frequent estuaries and intertidal zones and will haul out on sandbars, rocky shores, mudflats, log rafts, piers and ice floes. Seward, Alaska (June 13, 2018) –A female harbor seal pup and female sea otter pup, both just days old, were recently admitted to the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC). These two responses illustrate the importance of public awareness of proper stranding protocols. The harbor seal pup was found stranded on May 10, north of Homer. In the area she was found, it is speculated she was separated from her mother when the tides changed drastically. Wildlife Troopers transported the seal to ASLC wildlife responders. After thorough examination and rehydration, she was deemed a prime candidate for release. Staff is hopeful that if the pup continues to stabilize she will be prepped for release in the area where she was found. The sea otter pup was spotted by boaters floating alone in the middle of Prince William Sound. The good Samaritans became concerned when they heard the pup screaming and saw no signs of other otters in the area. They noticed the pup go face down in the water, which sparked them to pick the animal up. On June 1, she was transported to the Center. ASLC veterinarian, Dr. Kathy Woodie noted, “We’re so pleased she readily took to bottle feeding. Often sea otter pups take days before they will latch on a bottle and must be tube fed to receive critical nutrients.” While this little pup is strong, veterinarians are monitoring her for pneumonia from inhaling sea water; so far she shows no signs. Since the Alaska SeaLife Center responds to 33,904 miles of coastline, we rely on stranding partners and civilians to assist in accessing sick or injured marine mammals so medical care can be provided. However, when an animal is perceived to be in distress, the first reaction from an untrained observer is often to approach the animal. An immediate response can be a mistake as it is sometimes difficult to distinguish distress from normal behavior. Animal Care Specialist, Halley Werner notes, “Some animals leave their young in what they perceive to be a safe place while foraging for food and will return shortly. If you are concerned about an animal, before you intervene, call first 1-888-774-SEAL.” Marine animals have been safeguarded by the Marine Mammal Protection Act since 1972, so any disturbance to them is illegal without permission from the correct government authorities. If a sick or injured animal is encountered, ASLC staff urge people to call first, observe at a safe distance, respect the animal's territory, and keep pets and children away. ASLC operates a 24-hour stranding hotline where trained professionals will walk people through the proper steps to assist the animal. Call 1-888-774-SEAL if you see a marine mammal in distress. Seward, Alaska (October 24, 2018) – The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) is pleased to welcome four new members to its Board of Directors, and announces the election of two new officers: Board Chair Wendy Lindskoog of BP Alaska; and Vice Chair Terry Lauck of ConocoPhillips. Terms for new members and officers began September 28, 2018. The new board members will serve three year terms. Josh Howes has been the President of Premier Alaska Tours, Inc. since 2010. Josh has been instrumental in implementing and overseeing safety operations and providing ADA accessible motorcoaches to the land based tour receptive operator and charter company. He holds a Master’s of Science in Global Supply Chain Management and has studied abroad in Japan. Josh serves on various boards including the Alaska Chapter for the Red Cross, the Statewide Steering Committee for the Alaska Marine Highway Reform Project, and the Alaska Travel Industry Association. Dr. Laura “Lu” Levoy is an emergency medicine physician in Anchorage, Alaska. She studied medicine at West Virginia University and East Tennessee State University. Lu is licensed with the West Virginia Board of Medicine and the Alaska Board of Medicine. She enjoys reading, traveling, and sea kayaking. Dr. Herb Schroeder is Vice Provost for the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) and Founder at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He is the recipient of the White House 2004 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring for outstanding mentoring efforts and providing opportunities to the local communities of indigenous people. He is the Professor of Engineering at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Herb received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder. Christy Terry is the Seward Port Manager of the Alaska Railroad Corporation. She is a former member of the Seward Chamber of Commerce Board and a former City Council member. Christy is a member of the Alaska Association of Harbormasters and Port Administrators and chairs the City of Seward Port and Commerce Advisory Board. Christy is a Certified Port Executive. She was the recipient of Alaska’s Top 40 under 40 in 2012 and the Alaska Railroad’s Golden Spike Award in 2015. “Josh, Lu, Herb, and Christy add to the considerable depth of experience, skill, and community engagement of the Alaska SeaLife Center’s Board of Directors. Seward, Alaska (March 14, 2020)– To support public health efforts in the best interest of our community and our staff, the Alaska SeaLife Center will close temporarily to the public beginning Monday, March 16 until further notice. Out of an abundance of caution, we have elected to close to do our part in the social distancing that may help protect our community from the further spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). At this time, there are no known cases of COVID-19 within the Alaska SeaLife Center or the Seward community. During this closure, essential staff, including members of our security, facilities, veterinary and animal care teams, will report to work as usual to maintain the building’s operation and provide vital care to our animals. Staff working on site have been advised of appropriate social distancing methods and have access to personal protective gear if necessary. We are implementing a remote work policy for all non-essential staff. All employees will be paid during this two-week closure. We plan to offer a variety of virtual programming so that the public may continue to engage with the Alaska SeaLife Center exhibits and animals. We will also take the opportunity to deep clean our facilities in accordance with CDC guidelines. Seward, AK (November 14, 2018)– The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) recently released a male harbor seal from Clam Gulch on November 8, at Bishop’s Beach in Homer. On July 15, bystanders first spotted the animal lying on the beach in Clam Gulch. After consulting with the ASLC Wildlife Response Team, Homer resident and ASLC Volunteer, Marc Webber, observed the seal from a distance. The seal was found very thin and not using his right flipper. Once he was recovered from the shore, Webber transported the seal to Soldotna, where he was met by ASLC’s wildlife responders. This harbor seal was treated for a bone infection at the end of his right flipper. He was estimated to be about two months old, and quickly began eating as his health improved. Due to this animal’s injury, he required care longer than most seals. The staff remained cautiously optimistic that he would regain use of his flipper and become eligible for release. Since arrival, he has more than doubled in body weight going from 22 to 44 pounds in preparation for a release during the winter. ASLC veterinarian, Dr. Kathy Woodie states, “We’re so pleased he has made a full recovery. The goal of our Wildlife Response Team is always to work towards returning the animal to the wild when possible, so cases like this are always special.” The Wildlife Response Team released this seal Thursday, November 8, on Bishop’s Beach in Homer. A group of ASLC’s local volunteers were there to assist and observe the successful release of the seal back to the wild. Prior to the seal’s release ASLC Corporate Donor, GCI, was given the opportunity to name this seal because of their level of financial commitment to the Wildlife Response program. On Election Day, GCI encouraged the public to vote on a name for this rescued harbor seal. The name selected was Hubbard, fitting this year’s naming theme of Alaskan glaciers. With the Alaska SeaLife Center responding to stranded marine mammals along 33,904 miles of coastline, volunteers are critical. Seward, Alaska (May 9, 2019) –On April 13, the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted a one-week-old bearded seal pup into their Wildlife Response Program. The female pup was observed on the shores of Shaktoolik by local residents. A few school children in the village took it upon themselves to ensure the seal wasn’t harassed by people or pets. Ice seals are hunted for subsistence purposes in many northern villages of Alaska, but since the children became attached to this particular animal, the village decided to call ASLC for help. Village Police Officer, Jeffery Paniptchuk, played a crucial role in transporting the seal from the village to Ravn Air. He located the pup after National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) granted permission to secure the animal. Upon arrival to the Center, ASLC staff noted the pup was extremely underweight. Adding weight onto a young bearded seal is no simple task. In the wild, bearded seal pups gain three times their weight within a few weeks of birth, indicating mother’s milk has a high fat content. “If you feed too much fat to a starving animal too quickly it can be harmful. We have to take her weight gain slow to make sure her body can process the nutrients,” states Wildlife Response Curator, Jane Belovarac. Since this is one of the few bearded seal pups in ASLC’s history, a special formula was created for her with the vet staff taking elements from walrus, harbor seal, and fish gruel formulas. Because this pup was extremely underweight upon arrival, it had trouble regulating body temperature, especially when swimming. “When she first started swimming, staff had to assist her out of the water to ensure she didn’t get too cold,”states Husbandry Director, Lisa Hartman. Staff are working to increase her blubber layer through regular feedings every four hours. The last time ASLC responded to a bearded seal in distress was 2002. This animal is non-releasable due to the National Marine Fisheries Service policy established for the four species of Alaskan ice seals. Ribbon, bearded, spotted, and ringed seals are considered non-releasable in the state due to consideration of subsistence hunters. Seward, Alaska (May 21, 2019) –The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) responded to two juvenile northern elephant seals hauled out on the shores of Seward, Alaska. Since opening in 1998, the ASLC has responded to eleven elephant seals in the state. Although northern elephant seals are known to visit the Gulf of Alaska to feed, they rarely are found on the beaches of Alaska. These seals had flipper tags, which identified their birthing area as Kings Range and Piedras Blancas, California. ASLC’s Wildlife Response Team did not actively monitor the first elephant seal stranding because this seal was sufficiently secluded from heavy use areas. After resting several days, the seal swam off on its own. The second elephant seal hauled out in a high traffic area near the Seward Harbor. ASLC staff relocated the seal via boat to a quiet location within Resurrection Bay. A week later, on May 14, this animal was again beached south of town at Lowell Point. Traffic signs were placed around the seal notifying the public to keep a respectful distance. Within two days, the seal swam off. Seals haul out on Alaska beaches when it is time to molt (shed their hair). Molting is a very energetically demanding process for pinnipeds, especially for elephant seals. Elephant seals experience a catastrophic molt where they lose all their fur at once. ASLC Wildlife Response Curator, Jane Belovarac notes, “When elephant seals are in their molt, they can look sickly. They don’t just lose their hair, but they also shed the underlying segments of skin as well.” ASLC professionals are confident that while these animals appear lethargic and injured, it is due to their molt. Both elephant seals that were reported in Seward had robust and healthy body conditions, and did not require veterinary treatment. “While it is unusual to see northern elephant seals on the beaches of Alaska, it is not outside their range of behavior,” said Wildlife Research Biologist Sharon Melin, with NOAA Fisheries’ Alaska Fisheries Science Center. “During their solitary migration, individuals haul out in small numbers all along west coast beaches. After the long migration from California to feeding areas near Alaska, the juvenile seals may have needed to haul out to rest before continuing their migration or foraging activities.” The northern elephant seal is the largest of the “true” seal in the Northern Hemisphere. Adult males use their large inflatable noses during the winter breeding season to resonate sound when vocally threatening each other. The largest colonies of northern elephant seals are found off southern California in the Channel Islands. They have one of the longest migrations of any mammal; some have been recorded traveling over 13,000 miles roundtrip. Seward, Alaska (August 14, 2020)The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) has been granted a generous dollar-for-dollar matching donation of $100,000 from a partnership of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Royal Caribbean Group, and SSA Marine. The Alaska SeaLife Center is in the midst of an urgent public information and fundraising campaign to raise $2 million in funding by September 30. Uniquely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, ASLC will not be able to maintain operations of the Center through the winter due to a lack of summer visitor revenues. Public support has been inspiring, and the Alaska SeaLife Center is more than halfway to its goal. Alaska’s tourism industry, especially the cruise sector, has been similarly devastated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cruise ship guests are essential to the financial stability of many of Alaska’s coastal towns, and Seward is no exception. “We know these companies are struggling just as we are, which is why we are so moved to announce that this partnership has stepped up with a donation of $100,000 to support our efforts to remain open. We’re stunned and so deeply appreciative,” said President and CEO Tara Riemer. Seward, Alaska (February 25, 2020)– A young male sea otter pup was admitted to the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) on January 17, 2020. Thetwo week old otter pup was found stranded on a beach near Seldovia, AK with snowballs embedded in his fur and surrounded by birds. A local resident called the stranding hotline to report that the young otter had been seen alone and there were no other otters in sight. After receiving permission from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Smokey Bay Air donated the flight to get the pup to Homer where a team of volunteers transported the otter to the Center. The sea otter pup, now seven weeks old, is under 24-hour care from our Wildlife Response Team. “Young otter pups like this one need constant care and attention, from grooming his coat to encouraging him to play in the pool. We are with him around-the-clock,” stated Wildlife Response Curator, Jane Belovarac. Currently, the otter is getting fed both formula and solid food every 3 hours. The team has slowly introduced clam into his diet and he is progressing well. Caretakers continue to work on getting him to practice proper grooming skills like rolling in the water and swimming with purpose. This young pup has already proven to be quite the athletic otter as he swims and manipulates toys in the water. When an animal is in distress the first reaction is often to tend to it. This can be a mistake as it is sometimes difficult to distinguish distress from normal behavior. Sea otters leave their young in what they perceive to be a safe place while they forage for food. If people or pets are nearby when they return they are likely to abandon their young. Marine mammals have been safeguarded by the Marine Mammal Protection Act since 1972, so any disturbance to them is illegal without permission from the correct government authorities. If a sick or injured animal is encountered, ASLC staff urge people to call first, observe at a safe distance, respect the animal’s territory, and keep pets and children away. Seward, Alaska (June, 24 2020) – The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted six harbor seal pups into the Wildlife Response Program during the first half of June. The first five pups, four females and one male, were all found stranded in the Cook Inlet area. The most recent male pup, found on June 15, is from Juneau. All of the seals admitted to the program arrived malnourished and dehydrated, but with no other significant injuries. The pups are all in similar stages of recovery, receiving fluids and supplemental tube feedings. The goal is to increase their weight, boost their immune systems, and then teach them to fish before they can hopefully be released back to the area they were found stranded. Since interns and volunteers could not come to ASLC this summer due to COVID-19, the core Wildlife Response Team is working long hours to care for these six new seal patients and an adult sea otter. “Taking care of six young pups all needing to be tube-fed is a lot of hard work especially with our reduced staffing, but it’s rewarding. We've adapted to COVID-19 restrictions by using staff from other departments instead of hiring seasonal interns and coming up with more efficient ways to manage animal care.” states Dr. Carrie Goertz, Director of Animal Health. The most recent harbor seal pup was picked up in the Center’s new Wildlife Response van. This vehicle was generously donated by Marathon Petroleum Corporation, HDR Marine, Graphic Works, Partners4Wildlife, Sea Otter Foundation, and Reynolds Marine LLC. This van has arrived at an ideal time in the midst of the stranding season because mobility is vital for the Wildlife Response Team to quickly access patients from all parts of Alaska. Seward, Alaska (December 7, 2020) – The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted a 2-week-old sea otter pup to the Wildlife Response Program on November 12. The male sea otter pup was spotted by residents near a beachfront home in Homer, Alaska. The good samaritans followed the proper protocols when spotting a wild animal in distress; they called ASLC after observing the otter from a safe distance for over an hour. The pup was vocalizing for quite some time near the water’s edge. When the tide came in, he ended up high and dry on the shore. His dire condition and lack of nearby otters spurred ASLC volunteers to pick him up and transport him to the Center with USFWS permission. This sea otter pup, initially weighing 5.6 pounds, arrived malnourished and dehydrated. “This pup was in critical condition when he came to us. He was so hungry that he tried to chew the nipple off the baby bottle when we gave him his first feed,” notes Elizabeth deCastro, Veterinarian. While he clearly had an appetite, the team worked to integrate formula slowly to not overwhelm his system and encourage him to eat more moderately. After a few weeks of providing round-the-clock care for this now 8 pound pup, the staff is cautiously optimistic about his condition. “He is proving to be a very independent pup. He has been exploring his pools extensively and is already taking really good care of his coat,” states Veterinary Assistant Specialist, Hanna Sundstrom. Next steps will be to get him eating more solid food like clam and encourage him to swim and dive in a larger pool. Due to the Alaska SeaLife Center’s financial setbacks resulting from reduced visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center’s Wildlife Response Program is more reliant on donors than ever before to care for animals like this sea otter pup. ASLC is grateful for the public’s overwhelming response to the Save the Center Campaign launched during the summer. Over 4 million dollars was raised, and 2.3 million of that amount came from individual donors. Thanks to the support, the Alaska SeaLife Center’s doors are still open and the team can continue rescuing stranded and injured animals like this pup. These appointments took place at the Alaska SeaLife Center Board of Directors’ annual meeting in September 2020. Rachel Kallanderis Managing Partner of Kallander & Associates LLC, an advocacy and political strategy firm in Anchorage, and Founder and Executive Director of Arctic Encounter (AES), a nonprofit organization. AES convenes the largest annual Arctic policy event in the U.S. in addition to international events with global partners throughout the circumpolar north. Hailing from her roots in a Cordova fishing family, Rachel brings over a decade of public relations, policy development, campaign, and strategic communications experience to the ASLC Board. Having served as professional staff in the U.S. Congress and the Alaska State Legislature, and in leadership positions on several statewide political campaigns, Rachel brings broad experience in the Arctic, fisheries, legal, and political sectors. Rachel will serve on the Board of Directors for a three-year term and sit on its Marketing & Communications Committee. Terry Lauckis the Director of Environment & Permitting for ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. Originally from Nebraska, Terry has been employed by ConocoPhillips for over 32 years, having held a variety of environmental, regulatory, and process improvement assignments in five different states before relocating to Alaska in 2014. Terry has been a dedicated member on the Board of Directors since January 2015. Seward, Alaska (May 21, 2021)– The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) is saddened to announce the passing of the juvenile ringed seal admitted to the Wildlife Response Program on May 12. The ringed seal, found in Dutch Harbor, arrived malnourished, dehydrated, and wheezing. Wildlife Response staff vigilantly treated the animal, but unfortunately he passed during the night of May 16. “I thought he had come to us in time as he had an attitude and resisted us when we handled him. However, he was suffering from parasitism, malnutrition, emaciation, dehydration, and a bacterial infection and unfortunately succumbed to those problems,” states ASLC Director of Animal Health, Dr. Carrie Goertz. The general findings after the preliminary necropsy revealed he was severely immunocompromised, showed signs of bacterial infection likely pneumonia or bronchitis or both, and organ congestion, which is consistent with shock possibly from decreased lung function or infection. The specific cause of death is still unknown and the team at ASLC awaits results from more extensive testing. The Alaska SeaLife Center thanks Ravn Air for generously donating a flight for this seal from Dutch Harbor. Without their help the animal would not have made it to the Center as quickly. The Center also thanks donors that gave to the seal’s care. The Wildlife Response Program can offer second chances for animals like this ringed seal because of generous program contributors. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted two more harbor seal pups into their Wildlife Response Program within just a day of each other, raising the total number of patients to six. On June 22, a female pup from Port Moller on the Alaska Peninsula was transported to the Center. The seal (pictured in this release) was found near the town by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The pup was monitored for a few days, but since it was so close to town, more people began investigating it. After receiving National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) approval the pup was picked up. Lake Clark Air graciously donated a flight for the seal after already donating a flight for a pup the previous week. Upon the initial admit exam, the main concerns of the veterinary team include low body weight, dehydration, and a puncture wound on her flipper, likely from some type of predator. The team is currently providing initial stabilizing treatments and examining the patient further to understand the severity of the animal’s condition. On June 23, another harbor seal pup was spotted by NOAA officials intermittently showing up on a beach in Juneau. It appeared to be very underweight with no other seals in the area. The animal just arrived to the Center and the veterinary team is still doing preliminary examinations. Updates will be provided after further treatment. The harbor seal pups that have already been admitted in the Center’s Wildlife Response Program are all in various stages of recovery. The male pup found in Seward on May 27 presented with neurological issues and vision impairment likely from a difficult birth. The team is impressed with how far he has progressed, but he continues to display neurological challenges that will likely never resolve. For this reason, the team believes he may not be releasable since these challenges will put him at a significant disadvantage in the wild. The male pup found in Port Moller on June 15 is still in critical care. He arrived severely underweight and consequently is still very weak from malnourishment. While he is not strong enough to swim on his own, the team is cautiously optimistic that he will gain the weight and strength he needs. The two other seals, one from the Little Susitna River and one from Anchor Point, are progressing more quickly. They are now in outdoor holding areas with their own pools and graduating from re-hydrating liquids to fish formula and even some whole fish. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) admitted a two-day-old sea otter pup to the Wildlife Response Program on August 8. The female pup was found stranded on a remote beach in Seldovia by a family camping nearby. “When we enco untered this tiny creature who looked so helpless, we felt that we had to do something. We remembered hearing that the Alaska SeaLife Center helps to rescue animals in need, so we reached out. Luckily we had cell service where we were camping,” explains the pup’s rescuers, Neil Waggoner and Marisa Jaso. An adult sea otter was spotted in the area, but this animal did not approach the pup. After observing the pup for a day, the family sprung into action. After receiving U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permission, the team at ASLC reached out to stranding partner, Michael Opheium of the Seldovia Village Tribe, for assistance. He cared for the otter overnight until she could be transported via water taxi to Homer the following day. The Homer Veterinary Clinic was called upon to administer fluids before her long car ride to Seward. This sea otter pup, weighing just under three pounds, arrived weak but fairly stable. The team was concerned about her initially because generally sea otter pups are very vocal, but this pup arrived more lethargic and silent. “Otter pups are very hands-on animals to begin with so seeing this young pup come out of the kennel, barely reacting to staff, was concerning. After her exam it was crucial to get some calories on board and thankfully she latched onto the bottle right away. She has been eating well since then, so I am cautiously optimistic,” states Hanna Sundstrom, Veterinary Assistant Specialist. After a few days of care, the pup has brightened, but the veterinary team is continuing to monitor her closely. While eight harbor seal pups are currently being cared for at the Center, this is the first sea otter pup admitted to the Wildlife Response Program in 2021. Sea otter pups require round-the-clock care so staffing will change drastically in the rehabilitation department in order to feed and groom her every two hours. As the first executive to serve in this newly created senior leadership position, Dr. Wong will lead the team of educators and scientists in a collaborative commitment to promote ASLC’s science and education programs. Dr. Wong earned her B.A in Environmental Studies and English Literature from the University of Toronto, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Brown University. She comes to ASLC after serving as Assistant Director for Science and Technical Assistance at Washington Sea Grant in Seattle. Dr. Wong has additionally served in executive roles at the Woodland Park Zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo, and The Ocean Project in Providence, Rhode Island. “We are very fortunate to find a leader with Wei Ying’s passion for education, science and conservation,” says ASLC President and CEO Tara Riemer. “She brings to us more than 20 years of experience as a highly respected educator, speaker and scientist. The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) and International Bird Rescue (IBR) finalized a mutual services agreement to train, prepare, and respond to wildlife impacted by oil spills together. ASLC and IBR have a common mission of helping animals in need and after two years of strategizing have finalized an official partnership to strengthen oil spill response. “This union is critical because we will expand our response capabilities exponentially. We can do more for animals working together than working independently,” explains ASLC Chief Operating Officer, Chip Arnold. The organizations boast a combined 70 plus years of knowledge in wildlife response. ASLC has over 20 years of experience rescuing and rehabilitating marine mammals throughout the state of Alaska. Additionally, ASLC created mobile response conex units in 2016 to deploy in the event of a spill. These units provide the ability to bring a condensed version of the Center directly to affected zones. The Alaska SeaLife Center admitted a northern fur seal pup to the Wildlife Response Program on January 31, 2023. Fur seals are relatively uncommon wildlife response patients, and have not been cared for at the ASLC since 2017. The female pup, estimated to be around six months old, was seen swimming erratically near the shore in Sitka, Alaska. Her abnormal behavior worried local residents, who reported the pup to the ASLC 24-hour stranding hotline (1-888-774-7325). Sitka is an unusual location to see northern fur seals this time of year, which raised concerns for her survival by ASLC staff. After receiving approval from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the animal was transported to the Center for treatment. The main concerns found by the ASLC veterinary team upon the initial admit exam were dehydration, malnourishment, and signs of an unknown infection found in her bloodwork. Despite these concerns, she was observed to be active and alert when handled. The team found no evidence of severe physical trauma; however, noted that the pup seems smaller than average for her age. Staff are currently providing initial treatments and examining the patient further to understand more details about her condition. The Alaska SeaLife Center Board of Directors announced today that Dr. Tara Riemer is stepping down after 20 years of service with the Center, the last 11 years as President and CEO. Board Chair Josie Hickel said a national search will take place to find a replacement for Dr. Riemer. She said the board will seek a new leader who will carry forward the Center’s mission into a new phase of growth and development. She added that The Foraker Group will assist a board transition committee in a well-planned and expansive search for the next CEO. “We are confident that we will find a qualified and dynamic leader to join the board and the Center’s strong management team,” Hickel said. “We expect a smooth transition. Dr. Riemer plans to remain in her position to support a successful transition effort.” Dr. Riemer said that even though she is choosing to leave her position, she still strongly supports the Alaska SeaLife Center and its mission, and she expressed gratitude to the board, staff, and community for the support they have given her. “I leave with many fond memories of my work at the Center,” Dr. Riemer said. “One of the best was my chance to provide hands-on help to rehabilitate a baby beluga whale. For me, that brought our mission to life. To work with our amazing animals and such a passionate staff has been an extremely rewarding experience.” Dr. Riemer pointed to one project that demonstrates the dedication and commitment of the Center’s board and staff. “During COVID we faced a significant funding challenge,” she said. “To meet this challenge, we launched the Save the Alaska SeaLife Center Campaign. Its goal was to raise $2 million to make up for revenue losses during the pandemic. Without the funds, the Center would have closed, and animals would have been moved to other locations. This message reached people in Alaska and beyond, and the Center is now more financially secure.” Hickel expressed deep appreciation to Dr. Riemer on behalf of the board not only for her leadership and service but also for her commitment to a thoughtful transition process. “When Dr. Riemer joined the Alaska SeaLife Center 20 years ago, she brought business acumen and a background in scientific research,” Hickel said. “Under her leadership, the Center has grown and developed into a world-class organization providing education, research, and programs that have improved our knowledge of Alaska’s unique marine environment.” “Dr. Riemer is leaving the Center in a much better position than when she first started working here,” Hickel concluded. “She will be greatly missed by the board, our employees, donors, and the whole Alaska SeaLife Center community. The Alaska SeaLife Center’s (ASLC) Wildlife Response Program now has three harbor seal pups under its care after the admit of two new patients — one female from Kachemak Bay on May 20, and another female from the Copper River Delta on May 27. The first pup was spotted by kayakers near Bradley Lake power plant, and images identified it as a premature birth due to its white lanugo coat (typically shed in utero). Unfortunately, the pup’s location along mud flats would make access difficult for most boats — a situation compounded by a high wind advisory that day. After many hours on the phone with Homer water taxis and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) law enforcement, rescue attempts had to be called off. Two days later, the situation took a fortunate turn when a second party called with similar reports of a lanugo pup in the same area. Pictures sent matched those from the original call, leading staff to conclude it was likely the same seal. Because the party had a small skiff already beached in the area, they agreed to retrieve the seal and transport it from Kachemak Bay to Homer, where it was handed off to ASLC staff and transported back to Seward. This newest patient is the third lanugo pup to be admitted this season (the first of which died soon after admit due to challenges related to its premature birth, and the second of which remains under the care of wildlife response staff). The second abandoned pup report came from a Cordova State Wildlife Trooper on behalf of a fleet of commercial fishermen. The fisherman reported that the seal had been seen without its mother for multiple days, and was beginning to appear exhausted. With permission from NOAA, a wildlife trooper landed a plane on a nearby beach and took possession of the seal to be transported to the ASLC. The pup stayed the night in Cordova, receiving supportive care from local medical personnel, before catching a flight to Anchorage the following day. The pup was then picked up by NOAA officials and handed off to ASLC wildlife response staff. During their initial admit exams, both pups were found to be underweight and dehydrated, with the premature pup suffering additionally from malnourishment and several surface wounds. Because premature harbor seal pups have only about a 50% survival rate when admitted to a wildlife response program, delicate care will be necessary. The team is currently providing initial stabilizing treatments to both patients and keeping a close watch to ensure the best possible chance of survival.
