Science Spotlight

Why It's Important:

The arctic is critical habitat for many marine bird species of subsistence (i.e. greater white-fronted goose; Anser albifrons) and conservation importance (i.e. Steller’s eider; Polysticta stelleri). With prospects of increasing development of oil and gas resources in the arctic seas (Chukchi and Beaufort Seas), establishment of baselines and assessment of sensitivity of arctic marine birds to hydrocarbon (oil) exposure will provide key information needed for management and conservation of birds potentially impacted by development. We collaborate with Drs Suydam and Stimmelmayr from the North Slope Borough, with funding through the UAF Coastal Marine Institute.
